Summer sandals, summer recipes, summer reading, and summer shows
I realized something. Because the “SHOPPING” portion of TWD is always longer and full of links, I’m going to move it to the top of the Digress so you can click your heart out before you read about what I’m watching, reading, listening to, and making. Sound good? Great. Let’s go.
SHOPPING
I was flirting with these Birkenstock/Jellies hybrid for weeks before I finally pulled the trigger, and I am so glad I did. They are everything I was hoping for and more. IMPORTANT: Size up a FULL size. I’m a 7 and got an 8 based on all the reviews about the fit. Also, they are extremely popular so they’re sold out and backordered on a lot of sites. I’m linking several retailers who sell them!
I also got these strappy flats that I LOVE. The straps land in just the right way so no toe is suffocated or left behind, and there is no digging in whatsoever. I got them in the classic saddle leather brown, but they’re available in black, white, and a gold if you’re fancy.
My last new pair of sandals are these black leather flip flops by Gianni Bini (at Dillard’s). Fashion Jackson has been touting them for a minute, swearing that they’re more than meets the eye, so I bit and I’m glad I did because she was right. I love that they’re a “dressier” flip flop you can wear with summer date night looks but also with casual shorts and a tee midday. We love a flip flop that does both.
Old Navy is having a big Memorial Day sale, so I snuck away yesterday to go check out their stuff in-store and I gotta be honest with y’all — it’s all shit. The only thing I found that I love are these cropped linen-blend pants. Otherwise, I dropped $150 on Ziggy because he is rapidly outgrowing his clothes right now and ALL their toddler stuff is 50% off! I don’t know if anyone cares, but here are a few things I got him that I just love:
A few of these oversized shirts so he can grow into them
This purple tee that was just too cute
These chambray “dock” shorts because are you kidding me?
I haven’t gotten my hair trimmed since last April because I chopped it back in 2023 and 2018 and am still recovering from the PTSD of it all. That said, even though my hair is super long (for me) right now, I couldn’t wait to start taking Nutrafol the literal day I got home from the hospital with Rhodes. It’s four pills a day, which I know is a lot for the average person to house, but I’m a freak of nature and can take, like, eight pills at a time (humble brag) with several massive swigs of water so it’s nothing to me. I’m hoping to bypass the whole postpartum hair loss thing with the power of Nutrafol if I can. They’re actually offering a 25% off sale right now whether you sign up for a 1-month, 3-month, or 6-month supply AND a free travel gift. Y’all know I don’t often hop on trends that everyone is shilling, but I really believe in this stuff. They make different formulas for all age groups, and they have men’s stuff, too! Might order some for Zac…
Speaking of big discounts, did you know that you can find one-of-a-kind rugs on Wayfair? Yeah, they have run of the mill crap but they also have vintage stuff, too. It’s actually where I got our kitchen runner a few years ago, which is still going very strong. This one is actually super similar! I’m also browsing Wayfair this weekend for some summertime things for our back deck. Definitely want a giant Jenga, love these fluted acrylic drinking glasses, and am very intrigued by this wine chilling and aeration carafe by Rabbit 👀
WATCHING
Love & Death is a show from 2023 starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemmons that I just completely missed somehow? It’s based on a true story and I’m almost positive a show called “Candy” was made based on the same story but starring Jessica Biel, but I won’t Google it because I don’t want to spoil the plot for myself. Anyway, Zac and I very randomly started it a month ago (lol), and even though we’re creeping our way through, we really like. Elizabeth Olsen is so good, man. Like fantastic. She’s such a good actress, and I never realized she was so chesty! Love that for us big boobed broads!
I wasn’t ever going to watch the final season of Queer Eye because the drama with Bobby and then Karamo and the bully vibes I get from JVN really turned me off to the whole thing, BUT then I had a newborn and needed something to watch while I pumped/fed/nursed so I tuned in. Even with all the BTS drama, it’s just so good and I’m really sad they’re stopping. Jeremiah is a gem and only got two seasons, is that right? Maybe three? I don’t remember but it isn’t enough. If I never saw Karamo and his filler ever again, it’d be too soon and JVN grates on me, but I love Antoni, Jer, and Tan s0o0o0o0o0o much. Especially Tan. Ugh.
Another postpartum special we’ve revisited is our obsession with Top Chef. This is ALL I watched when I was pregnant with Ziggy, and Zac and I all but forgot about it… until now. We’re actively watching season 23, and even though I saw who wins by accident, I’m still very much into it. Chefs - true chefs - are fascinating to me. To make a dish on the spot from pure scratch, no recipe developers or time, is mind-blowing. Plus, food is so incredibly personal and tastes are so wildly subjective, to make something that blows someone away is a feat. A true craft. That’s why I love cooking and baking shows so much!
READING
Still going hard on Cutting for Stone, but also added Cazzie David’s latest book of essays into the mix because I saw it at a bookstore and couldn’t not bring this cover home with me.
MAKING
broccyourbody’s Salmon Piccata is impeccable. I LOVE piccata anything, and doing it with salmon took it over the top. So so so good.
My mom made these mexicali chicken enchiladas growing up, and they have become a go-to in my house. Sure, the recipe includes 90s mom classics like “cream of mushroom” soup and “cream of chicken” soup, but trust me when I say the flavor is OUT of this world and anyone who’s ever had them dies for them.
Another Brocc Your Body special I made recently are these coconut lime shrimp bowls. Literally comes together in 15 minutes and tastes like you’re on the damn beach in Tulum.
It wouldn’t be a Weekly Digress without a Caroline Chambers recipe, and these blackened fish taco bowls were… I don’t even have words, really. The recipe is a lot of moving parts (rice, slaw, salsa, fish), but none of it is hard or complicated. It just takes a second to assemble it all, but when it’s done… dear God. I made them for my MIL and Zac last week and we were spiraling out over how good they were. Will be making again!
Gotta end on a sweet note. I was craving brownies last week but didn’t want a super involved recipe, so I Googled “fast brownie recipe,” got this one served to me, made them, and OK YUM. It was a one-bowl situation and they came out so perfect and so fudgy because of those chocolate chips. Probably gonna make them again this weekend.
Have a great long weekend and catch you here next week hopefully if I have time. We’ll see.
xox,
EGM
P.S. Zac and I went on a date last night. A DATE. Unbelievable. I “documented” a Get Ready With Me for fun. Did you catch it on IG?

Thanks for the recommendation (last fall!) for The Road to Tender Hearts. I finished it last week and thought it was very entertaining. It reminded me a little bit of Nothing to See Here (Kevin Wilson) and So Far Gone (Jess Walters).
